The Captain will now head to Antalya on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey for the main event, which runs from 7th to 13th March.
World number 86 Hancorn put in an impressive showing to push two-time Crucible finalist Carter to the verge of defeat. Despite coming up short, the Bristolian fired in breaks of 50, 68, 114 and 69 during the encounter.
However, four-time ranking event winner Carter showed his class at the crucial moment. He composed a steely break of 52 in the decider to wrap up the victory.
Ding Junhui put on a fine display to brush aside Welshman Andrew Pagett 5-2. Legendery Chinese cueman Ding has dropped to 30th in the world rankings, but his prowess was on full display today. Ding composed breaks of 138 and 120 on his way to victory.
Former Masters champion Yan Bingtao earned his place in the final stages with a 5-1 defeat of Steven Hallworth, while former Players Champion Joe Perry defeated Lee Walker by the same scoreline.
