Chengdu: World Sports City – World Snooker

A ceremony was held in Chengdu in China last week to announce Chengdu’s World Sports City Construction Strategy Outline.

The event was organised by Chengdu Municipal Government and Chengdu City Sports Bureau, in order to describe the blueprint for the future development of the sports industry, welcome more international sports properties and encourage events to be staged in Chengdu. The ceremony was covered by mainstream media in China, North America, the Asia Pacific region, Europe and Latin America.

The famous Tianxi Twin Towers, standing 220 metres high, were lit up by messages and logos from various sports including the World Snooker Tour.

Snooker’s International Championship was staged in Chengdu from 2012 to 2014, won by Judd Trump, Ding Junhui and Ricky Walden. One of China’s top players, world number 17 Zhou Yuelong, comes from the city.

Officials of Chengdu government and sports bureau, as well as representatives of top international sports institutions, attended the event. A video speech from WPBSA Chairman Jason Ferguson was played at the ceremony.
