Mark Williams feels he is just not good enough to cut it in the biggest games after an epic 17-16 defeat to Judd Trump in the World Snooker Championship semi-final.

It was the third time this season Williams has been on the wrong end of the result in one of the most memorable matches of the campaign, having lost deciding frames to Neil Robertson in the Masters semi and to Ronnie O’Sullivan in the Tour Championship quarter-final.

The 47-year-old deserves only credit for battling back from woeful positions as he found himself 7-1 and 12-5 behind, but clawed his way to leading 16-15 at one point, before Trump got over the line.

‘I managed to dig in and play some really good stuff,’ Williams told Eurosport.

‘It was a fantastic match, the crowd were unbelievable. I think for the first time ever I felt like I had 80 per cent of the crowd on my side, which is unheard of really.

‘Just a fantastic match to be involved in.’

Williams is never one to get too down after a defeat, but in another close loss in a huge match, it has left him questioning whether he can win the big ones anymore against the toughest competition.

‘I played pretty well all through the season and just came up short in the deciders,’ he said. ‘I’ve said it before, I’m perhaps just not good enough to get over the line in the big cases, another example there.

‘Nothing to be ashamed of, it’s just a fact. I don’t mind, I’m playing okay, just not quite good enough.

‘If I can keep playing like that next season, I can be a danger to anyone.

‘I’m not going to say I’m good enough to win tournaments or anything like that, but I’m definitely good enough to be a thorn in a lot of people’s sides.’
